Travel Theme: Doorways

What a great travel photo theme this week, thanks to Ailsa at Where's my Backpack? When I'm travelling around Europe I see all kinds of interesting doorways. Moving north to south, my first doorway is pretty in pink at the Royal College of Organists building in London. The facade resembles a giant cameo.

Crossing the English Channel into France, this solid wooden door in Paris hints at luxury within.

These simple whitewashed panels in the town of Tournus in the Burgundy region of France create a subtle backdrop for the flowering shrub next to the doorway.

Sometimes a doorway isn't really a doorway. Lyon is considered the gastronomic capital of France but the city is also known for its many frescoes.

I'm always amazed at how many doors have survived the centuries, like this well worn entryway in the medieval town of Viviers.

Another old door is this lovely one with carvings in the hill town of Eze Village.

This doorway on rue Obscura in Villefranche-sur-Mer appears prepared for flooding – probably a good idea since the access point to this covered street faces uphill.

The Cap Ferrat peninsula on the French Riviera is known for its lavish seaside villas. This simple doorway opening out onto a roadway captures a nautical theme.

Elsewhere on Cap Ferrat the mairie, or town hall, of Saint Jean Cap Ferrat also has a simple door but the surrounding facade caught my eye.

Doorways are even more elaborate in nearby Monte Carlo with its abundance of belle Ã©poque architecture.

And finally, I couldn't leave out Italy entirely so here's a favourite from Rome, this whimsical modern doorway at the Boscolo Palace Roma on Via Veneto.
