The Lost Vintage by Ann Mah |
Autumn is when the annual harvesting of grapes, les vendages, takes place in French vineyards. The colourful leaves outside my window have prompted me to switch from the whites and rosés of summer to more robust red wines, and pull The Lost Vintage by Ann Mah from my bookshelf. The novel revolves around the wine industry of Burgundy, as well as the Nazi occupation of France during WW II.
The charming town of Beaune is considered the 'wine capital of Burgundy'. The nearby Mâconnais countryside is also very picturesque, from rolling hillsides laced with rows of grape vines to the traditional Burgundian roofing tiles at Château Pierreclos where I tasted the local chardonnay.

All this talk of wine has me eager for the release next month of the 2018 batch of Beaujolais Nouveau. Meanwhile I'll enjoy The Lost Vintage with a glass of whatever wine I find in my fridge.
