London's Courtauld Gallery may be smaller than other notable art museums but its collection includes paintings by such celebrated artists as Edouard Manet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Vincent van Gogh. Due to a two-year closure of the gallery for a major redevelopment project, these important works of art are now on loan at other locations.

The Courtauld Gallery is based in Somerset House in central London. The impressive collection spans from the Renaissance to the 20th century but I focused my 2016 visit on the Impressionist and post-Impressionist works for which the museum is renowned.

Some of the gallery's masterpieces have travelled only a short distance to Trafalgar Square to join the National Gallery's exhibition Courtauld Impressionists: From Manet to Cézanne which runs from September 17, 2018 until January 20, 2019. They include Two Dancers on Stage by Degas, Renoir's La Loge, and two pieces by Manet.

Once the exhibition closes in January, the paintings will move to the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris. This new art museum and cultural centre opened its doors in October 2014. The Courtauld Collection, A Vision for Impressionism will run from February 20 until June 17, 2019. The exhibition will also include Van Gogh's A Wheatfield with Cypresses on loan from the National Gallery.

Meanwhile Paul Cézanne's painting Montagne Sainte-Victoire with Large Pine has travelled to the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum in Coventry, England where it will be displayed with other landscape paintings until January 20, 2019. Perhaps this painting will also make an appearance in Paris in February.

Two of the Courtauld's pieces by Vincent van Gogh are on currently on loan to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam: Peach Trees in Blossom and Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear. The latter is being shown in the Netherlands for the first time in almost ninety years.
