Map of the Heart by Susan Wiggs |
We've endured many days of extreme cold and heavy snowfall this winter so it's no surprise I was drawn to Map of the Heart by American author Susan Wiggs. The book's cover promises "a deeply emotional and atmospheric story that spans oceans and decades, from the present-day Delaware shore to the battlefields of World War II France". It also features a field of lavender in bloom.
Travelling by book to the sunny south of France seems like the ideal escape from a wandering polar vortex. Some of the story takes place in the French department of Var and the former capital of Provence, Aix-en-Provence. This university city is also the hometown of post-Impressionist artist Paul Cézanne.
