Côte d'Azur: A Bird's Eye View

In keeping with recent posts with an air travel theme, I wanted to share the views from my window as we approached Nice Airport in France last summer. Strong winds meant that we had to make our approach from the east, providing passengers on the right side of the aircraft with unforgettable views of the glamourous coastline known as the Côte d’Azur.

As we made our descent I recognized the famous Monte Carlo Casino and the seaside Oceanographic Museum in the tiny Principality of Monaco. A few years earlier I’d enjoyed a similar view from a tour boat.

Next up was Cap Ferrat, where Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild with its beautiful gardens and the town of Saint Jean Cap Ferrat can be found.

Just west of Cap Ferrat is the charming town of Villefranche-sur-Mer, an important port of call for Mediterranean cruise ships.

More cruise ships and yachts were docked in the busy Port of Nice which is nestled beneath Colline du Chateau, Castle Hill (the castle no longer exists). The city's War Memorial and #ILoveNice sign are also located at the foot of the hill.

The park atop Colline du Chateau has several scenic view points and a man-made waterfall.

As we got closer to the airport I could see the famous Promenade des Anglais which runs along the Baie des Anges and the luxury Hotel Negresco.

Approaching Nice Airport

And soon I was back on terra firma, ready to begin exploring the Cote d’Azur!
