It's the first long weekend of the summer here in Canada. We're celebrating the birthday of Queen Victoria, Britain's longest reigning monarch until Queen Elizabeth II surpassed her last September. Here are a few related London sights, beginning with the Victoria Monument in front of Buckingham Palace.

The love of the queen's life was Albert, the Prince Consort. Following his untimely death from typhoid in 1861 she commissioned a monument, the Albert Memorial, in Kensington Gardens. (The third photo below includes a member of the Elephant Parade, a 2010 World Wildlife Fund event to create awareness of the endangered Asian elephant.)

Across the street from the monument is Royal Albert Hall, the world famous concert venue named in his honour.

I hope you had a great weekend. I'm still enjoying mine!
