Royal Wedding in Windsor

Are you one of the billions worldwide who witnessed the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on Saturday morning? I set my alarm clock for 4:00 a.m. (EDT) and happily climbed out of bed for the royal watcher's event of the year. The weather in the charming Berkshire town of Windsor was ideal for a beautiful spring wedding.

The last big royal wedding took place at London's Westminster Abbey when Harry's older brother, Prince William, married Katherine Middleton in April, 2011. I watched the festivities with my own 'royal corgi'.

In November of 2017, Harry and Meghan announced their engagement at the Sunken Garden of Kensington Palace. This royal residence in London is the home of William and Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and their three children, as well as the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex as the newlyweds will be known.

Saturday's wedding ceremony took place in historic St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle.

While the crowds in Windsor struggled for a glimpse of the royal newlyweds I enjoyed the proceedings in the comfort of my pjs. To make the occasion special, I assembled a traditional English tea for breakfast: finger sandwiches, scones, tea cakes, and a glass of sparkling Prosecco to toast the happy couple.  My tea was grown on the Tregnothan Estate in Cornwall.

Meghan's elegant Givenchy wedding gown was exquisite; Amal Clooney's sunny yellow ensemble was my favourite of all the invited guests (George looked pretty good, too); and I loved the electric-powered Jaguar that the newlyweds drove to the evening reception at Frogmore House.

I also love the couple's strong connections with Canada. Three grandchildren of former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney joined Prince George and Princess Charlotte in the bridal party. Seven-year old twin page boys Brian and John Mulroney took excellent care of Meghan's beautiful 16-foot silk veil. (You'll find these favourite royal wedding moments on my Faye North Twitter feed.)

This is also the first long weekend of the summer for Canadians as we celebrate Victoria Day, in honour of Harry's great-great-great-great-grandmother.

And now that the excitement of the wedding is behind us, I suppose a Royal Baby Watch is next.

  1. Lovely post. I too sat here in my PJs, but only had a cup of coffee with me. Should have baked off those orange scones in the freezer.

    1. Thank you, Denise. But I must confess, I didn't do the baking.
